1850, northern California Heroes and villains from 3 cultures (Native Peoples, Chinese, Anglo) collide as they struggle to survive a raw frontier society. Native warrior-shaman (female) teams with Chinese martial hero (male) to save their peoples from ethnic extermination. Their destinies intertwine to fight for the rights of their son ISHI to have better options than beheading, hanging, slavery. What this novel offers •True accounts of events that moved men and women of the mid-to-late-1800’s. •The value systems generating the acts of individuals within historical events. •No-holds barred accounting of what went down between the dominant Euro-Americans and people of color—their sludge-like mentality, their subsequent actions during the Gold Rush, the events that led up to it, and the resulting paradigms that continue to present day America. •The story-line is even more extensive in that it weaves in influences from the Ching Dynasty, and the American Revolution. •It shows that the history’s impact lies forever with us in our daily moments. •It examines such issues as class warfare, cross-cultural gender models, and inter-generational expectations. What this novel does not have/does not do •This novel doesn’t merely recount events. •There’s no great emphasis on love scenes, none of the sappy soap opera romances, nor fortuitous sex. •It doesn’t have the “smart, snappy, with-it voice" of the modern man or woman. •It’s not a piece of the normal commercial literature built around vapid, untested characters, contrived dilemmas, and elitist world views. •It is not substantiated by "official" revisions of history. The principals YANA, warrior-shaman from Mt. Shasta, fights to keep her tribe from being exterminated; TAI-YING, famous “Red Stick” martial hero of Canton, finds “Gold Mountain” to be a dark labyrinth of hidden liaisons as he tries to get his countrymen an even break; LIVINGSTON LOWE, from Back Bay Boston old money, earns spurs as a canny predator in the wild arena of unbridled American commerce; and ISHI, the young son of YANA and TAI-YING, comes of age at a time when ranchers and miners hunt his head for bounty. Some of the trials YANA and TAI-YING face include their loss of personal freedom (slammed into Sailors Prison on the Embarcadero, SF); their escape from the US Army’s grasp; organized racial bashing; collusion of US government and corporations with Triads in running drugs, arms, laborers, prostitutes. As Warrior-Shaman of her tribe, YANA undergoes rigorous training. Her initiation burdens her with the prospect of choosing between a spiritual response to extinction or immediate retaliation in order to save her people. TAI-YING arrives in Chinatown as a problem solver for the newly-arrived Chinese laborers. As the chief Enforcer for the Hung Muhn Society, he lands smack in the middle of a war for valuable turf between the Tongs, Irish toughs, and prominent Anglo businessmen. His internal landscape is also in turmoil the new American culture threatens deeply-woven threads attaching him to strong family and cultural traditions. LIVINGSTON LOWE flees a soft, well-appointed Boston Brahmin nest to get from under the domination of stifling parents and a pre-ordained existence. Reality is a demanding instructor for him he finds he must do what’s necessary to survive and to succeed in business—including murder and sex-slaving. ISHI is sent away to the remote White Lotus Monastery in the Trinity Mountains to save his skin and the blue jade key guarding an 800 year-old family treasure. Ishi’s unfolding into manhood at the alpine refuge is counter-pointed by violent confrontations of both parents against an increasingly dominating Anglo culture. His dilemma Cultivate inner peace or train as a warrior monk seeking revenge? Gradually Ishi realizes that the Abbot is providing the government with a strike team of monks against the tribal coalition. For those tired of pap-crap level of novels on best-sellers list.

Well, well finally a book about the "lost" area of California. Mr Orem has written an excellent adventure filled with history and a rich description of life set in the early gold rush days of Upper Northern California. This is an area that has seen a great variety of history unfortunately a great deal of it tragic. Mr. Orem has captured that spirit and feeling of this area. Interweaving it with characters of all types he has found a way to include stories of as varied as transported Shaolin monks to hard-boiled Boston businessmen. This book reminded me of Clavell's and Von Lustbaden's. A great adventure. Mr Orem is a wonderful storyteller and because he had lived in this area and obviously understood it's great beauty and virtually unknown stories of historical people he has woven them together is this fine adventure. I invite anyone who likes western adventure mixed with historical intrigue to take look at this. I live in the area this book takes place in. My wife's relatives were some of the original "pioneers" and I have friends who are members of local native tribes. Thank you Mr. Orem for writing something about this rich area. I look forward to your next book.
